The Festival del film Locarno celebrates its 63rd year retrospective dedicated to Ernst Lubitsch with this highly readable book on the great German-born director. It traces the art of the master of comedy from his debut years in Germany to the culmination of his career in Hollywood. The directing style of the maker of Ninotchka, To Be or Not to Be and Heaven Can Wait is captured in original contributions from internationally known film critics, rounded off by a portrait written by filmmaker Peter Bogdanovich. The text is lavishly illustrated with photographs. This book is published on the occasion of the retrospective dedicated to Ernst Lubitsch by the Festival del film Locarno in 2010 curated by Carlo Chatrian.

Edited by Joseph McBride. With contributions from Peter Bogdanovich, Frédéric Bonnaud, Rinaldo Censi, Carlo Chatrian, Jean Douchet, Joseph McBride, Olivier Père.
